Tips for Summer Auto Repair
posted on

Summer’s on its way, and it’s time to think about maintenance and auto repair in Puyallup, WA. Let’s quickly run down a few tips that can get your car up to speed for summer:
Cooling System Maintenance - Antifreeze isn’t just for cold months -- it’s also a coolant that helps disperse the excessive heat that your engine generates. Over time, antifreeze/coolant breaks down and loses its effectiveness, as well as picking up corrosion and contaminants that can clog the radiator, water pump, heater core and internal cooling jackets. At Sea Tac Tire & Auto Tech, we’re experienced with this kind of auto repair in Puyallup, WA; we can do a cooling system flush to get rid of corrosion, we’ll test the thermostat and run a pressure test to find any weak spots or potential leaks in the cooling system.
Belts and Hoses -- Older vehicles had separate belts to power the alternator, fan and other external accessories. Today, most cars have a single serpentine belt that drives all those, reducing parasitic drag on the engine for efficiency. The serpentine belt will eventually wear out, of course -- it’s one of the most common items for any auto repair in Puyallup, WA. We’ll check the belt for fraying, chunks or glazing; while we’re at it, we’ll get a look at your hoses, clamps and the dozens of vacuum lines that help control engine functions.
A/C Repair or System Check -- Modern air conditioning systems are much more reliable and efficient than they were 30 years ago, but they can still gradually lose refrigerant over the winter months. We’ll recharge the system with environmentally-friendly refrigerant, including a dye that can make any leaks easy to spot, and inspect the entire system for any potential problems.
Tire Rotation -- This is one of the easiest and most effective maintenance tasks you can do on your vehicle. All vehicles have uneven weight distribution, since most cars have the engine in front; in addition, weight will transfer forward during braking and cornering. That all means that tires will wear in certain patterns over time; regular rotations will even out those wear patterns, extending tire life by thousands of miles. Tire rotations are best done every 5,000 miles, so it’s handy to have them done at the same time as an oil change.
