5 signs You May Need New Tires

posted on

Maintaining your car is a lot like going to the dentist. Generally, you only do so when there is a problem, but by then, it may be too late. Neglecting vehicles costs the economy over two billion dollars each year, so in order to save money and potential headaches down the line, here are five warning signs that you need new tires.

  1. Bulges and cracks

Typically, when a tire deflates, it bulges at the sides, making the tire look uneven. This will also lead to cracks along the sidewall, so if you are seeing unusual bulges or cracks, then new car tires are in your immediate future.

  2. Tread wear

On average, Americans drive their passenger cars and trucks about 10,000 miles per year. Because of all this wear, the treads on your tires are typically the first to go. You can use the penny test to check tire wear. To do this, take a penny, and with Lincoln's head upside down, put it between the tread blocks of the tire. If you cannot see Lincoln's head, then you still have a good amount of tread remaining. But if you can see it, you need new tires.

  3. Tire pressure

As a rule, a tire will lose its pressure at a rate of one pound per square inch per month. You should check your tire pressure every month, but if you are noticing it is losing pressure faster than normal, it may be time to service your vehicle to see what the problem is.

  4. The heat

Tire pressure drops in cold temperatures, and builds up when it is hot. Before you drive long distances in the summertime, make sure to check your tire pressure. If your tire is even a little deflated, it will generate more heat, and wear out faster.

  5. Vibrations

If your car is vibrating more than normal, this may be a sign you need new tires. Vibration from under the seats can signal that your rear tires are out of balance, and vibration under the steering wheel could mean you have suspension issues. Your car's ride should be smooth, and if it is not, it might be time to call your favorite friendly auto mechanic.

Knowing when to change your tires is key to ensuring your safety, so keep in mind these warning signs.
